Not many people appreciate choral music in Singapore, and even fewer know that I spend two days a week singing and rehearsing in the SYC Ensemble Singers (formerly known as the Singapore Youth Choir) and have done so for the past five years.

Music is a huge part of my life, and everything in between from pop music to choral music, I adore and love :) Music is the universal language of mankind, it is what feelings sound like. Its language is a language which the soul alone understands, but which the soul can never translate. 

This arrangement of Sarah Mclachlan's beautifully composed Angel was arranged for our choir, and we performed it at our last concert. I love the harmonies and dissonances in this piece, it's so heart-wrenching and soothing at the same time, and I love the new life given to a familiar pop melody. It is such a gorgeous piece :)

Frivolous things sometimes make me very happy.

For instance, manicures!
Actually, the last manicure that I got done at a salon was probably about a year ago! I'm not as nail crazy as some of my friends, and usually just let my manicures grow out, much to the horror and dismay of my friends who are crazy over polishes and nails. But well, I am really not too fussed about nails most of the time!

If I do get my nails done nicely though, I make sure that they are super awesome and pretty! Just like this specially customized set of The Velvet Doll nails done by Jenrine of The Nail Artelier, how pretty are they?
I can't even begin to express how much I love them, on so many counts!!
1. Jenrine's skill at nail art is impeccable!
2. Pastel colors.. They just put me in a good mood.
3. The Velvet Dolls logo right on my nails?! This is definitely the mark of good branding, and a well-designed logo. (HAHAHA. *pats self on back*)

I've been attending my fair bit of events lately, and you know, events always look like they're so fun, but after you've attended one too many, they can be quite a drag sometimes!

Thankfully, the babes at Benefit always know how to make an event fun, and I had a really awesome time at Benefit's "Welcome To Flawless" event, that was held at Five and Dime Eatery!

I didn't manage to take much pictures during the event, so I'd just share some of those I found on Instagram! We were given a demonstration of Benefit's amazing new 15-hour primer, Stay Flawless!

I've always been a fan of Benefit's fun packaging and great products, and I can't wait to try this soon! :) I promise a review as well if it's good! :P

We had a super cute photo booth and all of us went insane! Haha. Everyone loves photo booths and props at events, can never go wrong! And of course, lots of canapes that were provided by Five and Dime!

I love it that attending events now are so much more enjoyable than they used to be, when I first started attending events, I was so awkward and loner-ish =.= Glad to have such wonderful company now!!

Some of us decided to stay at Five and Dime for lunch after the event, the inital plan was to travel to Changi for crabmeat pasta at La Cantina... But our plans got foiled because the restaurant closes in the afternoon! Meh. And the weather was just insanely hot that day so we were all like, LET'S JUST STAY HERE.

The dishes we ordered:

Mentaiko Pasta ($18)
Spaghetti tossed in creamy mentaiko, topped with more cod fish roe

Both Jess and Tricia ordered the Mentaiko Pasta: Jess didn't really like this, but Tricia loved it! But then again, Jess is such an amazing cook, her standards for food are on a totally different level from us common folks. I tried a couple mouthfuls and I thought it was nice, but not quite worth the $18 for only having just mentaiko and no meat!


Big Brekkie ($22)
Choice of scrambled or sunny side up eggs with pork bacon, chicken chipolata sausages, baked beans, sauteed mushrooms and thick toast

Evonne's Big Brekkie had really great scrambled eggs, but she said the sausages weren't fantastic. I don't like baked beans anyhow, so I didn't order this. I did try the scrambled eggs which were very tasty!


Miso Duck Salad ($12)
Romaine Lettuce tossed with Miso Sesame Dressing

After much contemplation, I settled for the Miso Duck Salad, which was very fresh and yummy! I liked the slices of duck and the fresh greens with miso sesame dressing! The japanese touch with the wakame seaweed and cubes of tofu was nice too! It wasn't a WOW dish though, so going back again just for a salad probably won't be on my agenda.

The desserts actually impressed us a whole lot more actually, even though the selection is quite limited!

Spiced Strawberries Eton Mess ($12)
With balsamic strawberries, creme anglais and spiced meringue

We all liked this dish, with the crisp meringue and the delicious creme anglais! I can't imagine one person finishing off the entire dish though. Definitely made for sharing.

Cranberry Almond Cake with Ice Cream (??)

And my favourite dish by far, the cranberry almond cake, with two scoops of vanilla ice cream on top of it! The cake was warmed up, so it tasted absolutely divine with the vanilla ice cream: I have a thing for baked desserts with ice cream teehee. And our little ice cream snowman was too adorable, with raspberries for ears and coffee beans for eyes!

We were all squealing like crazy while camwhoring with the ice cream snowman LOL. Before it started melting with its ears falling off! Probably the best part of my meal. Oops.

My conclusion: I wouldn't specially make a trip down to have a meal at Five and Dime, but if I were in the vicinity, I would still consider it?

Sorry this entry is such a mish-mash of random things, haha. I hope it's not too confusing to read! :S I've been trying to get back my blogging mojo recently. Decided that I want to update more often, so that I don't feel like time is slipping past me faster than I can document it down, frivolous or not! 

It's funny how much blogging (and social media) is a part of my life now. YZ and I had a long discussion the other day on how different we both were, six years ago, and now! Wouldn't have seen myself where I am today, if you'd asked me five years ago, where I'd be in five years time. But life is completely unpredictable like that, which is what makes life life, isn't it?

Brunch at Choupinette: The best Eggs Benny in Singapore!

Good morning Sunday!

I'm in a super cheery mood because:
1. The haze is finally lightening up!!! (I hope it stays that way)
2. I have an "off day" today: no shoot, no class, no rehearsals, no nothing!
3. YZ is back from Genting after 3 days! (My beh teh sor is here too wheeee!)
4. Just because it's a Sundaaaaay!

So yesterday, I was dragged out of bed way too early. For a brunch date with Evonne, at 9.30am no less. Which means I had to wake up at 8, spend an hour getting ready, then take half an hour to travel down. 8am on a Saturday morning! That is an unholy timing.

And of course, when I arrived late at about 10am, my dear Evonne was still on her way because she OVERSLEPT. What's new, my friend? Bwahahaha. Our brunch started an entire hour late =.=

Our conversation on where to have brunch went something like this:

Evonne: "LET'S GO CHOUPINETTE!!!"
Yina: "Where is Choupinette, ah?"
Evonne: "Bukit Timah. LOL"
Yina: "WTF BUKIT TIMAH HELLO?"

Evonne: "Or you want to go Little Diner?"
Yina: "And where is that??"
Evonne: "Bukit Timah also. LOL"
Yina: "........"

Evonne: "I will fetch you to Paragon (for event) afterwards mah. So you only need to cab once!" #consideratefriend Meet at 9.30 or 9.45?
Yina: 9.30 for sure. Cos we are gonna end up starting at 10.30 instead. #imsopsychic

Yes, apparently all wonderful brunch places in Singapore are in Bukit Timah, which is one of those strange locations that is exceedingly centralized but insanely far away from my house. Travelling to Bukit Timah feels like travelling to Pasir Ris for me. Meh.

Back to our brunch at Choupinette!

Choupinette is located at 607 Bukit Timah Road, next to Coronation Walk. It's pretty easy to spot, with a huge signage right above the restaurant.

The place is cozy and tiny, and it was jam-packed at 10am on a Saturday morning! Bustling with all kinds of folks, from families, to expats, and the usual brunch suspects, young couples, and groups of friends.

Fortunately, I spotted a tiny table for two right in a corner of Choupinette, almost every other seat was taken! We were then served the menu, which is just a simple one-fold spread.

Choupinette's menu is simple and easy to pick from. Every meal comes in a set, and when we inquired for ala carte prices, we were told that it's more worth it to get the set because getting the food ala carte is only about $3 cheaper than the set, which comes with a fruit juice and any hot drink.
My cranberry juice and I. And an extremely puffy face with swollen looking eyes :( I woke up with teary eyes and a runny nose, no thanks to the haze!

Thought that having a double expresso might wake me up a little and de-puff my eyes, but this tasted kind of weird to me and a little sourish *makes face* Not sure if it's just me because I don't know how to appreciate coffee, or are expressos supposed to taste like this?!

And finally on to the food.. We ordered one brunch set each to share, and when they arrived on our table, we were absolutely salivating!

Doesn't the spread look super appetizing? The perfect brunch to make a Saturday morning better, really.
Choupinette French Toast
Evonne started on the French Toast first whilst I had the Eggs Benny.. Two bites into it and she was like "Mmmm this is so good!!". The toast was liberally drenched in honey and berry compote. Evonne loved it.

I didn't fancy it as much because I felt that the compote was too saccharine sweet and by the time I got to this dish (since Evonne had it first) the toast was kind of soggy already! Much prefer Antoinette's crisp on the outside, and fluffy on the inside version with cream and salted caramel! Had a piece if it, before returning the dish to Evonne, who happily took it back. Hahaa. Well, to each their own!
Choupinette Eggs Benedict
As for the Eggs Benny, it was done to perfection.. I don't even like poached eggs and hollandaise sauce usually, (all the runny egg yolks went to Evonne) but Choupinette's Eggs Benny was definitely one of the best Eggs Benny I've had, (other close contenders would be Hatched and Antoinette) and I especially loved the generous serving of finely shaved ham sitting atop the toasted baguette!

The hollandaise sauce was rich and creamy too, and the entire combination was just superbly tasty! Ahhhhhhhh. *contented sigh* On the contrary, Evonne didn't like this because she prefers soft muffin instead of the toast, which was a lil tougher.

On the whole, I thought it was a very enjoyable brunch, the food made going the distance worth it! I'll be dreaming about those Eggs Benny for sure.

I wish calories didn't count, or that I had a bigger stomach, because Choupinette had such a huge display of bakes, cakes, and pies available! And they all looked so good!

So happy that JC shoes are now available at PVS Cineleisure, I love stepping into that shop even when I'm not looking to buy shoes. And I got this pair on sale too! *happy*

ELLE X Darlie Workshop at Loola's


When it comes to toothpaste, there is no question for me: it's always Darlie Expert White, ever since I tried it for a sponsored review and have loved it since!

It sounds strange to rave over a toothpaste but its true, Darlie Expert White is now my favourite toothpaste, I love everything about it from the gel texture to the minty taste and the way it keeps my teeth clean and white! ;) 

Attended a ELLE X Darlie Expert White workshop/event that was held at Loola's and it was such a fun and interesting session, with talks from celebrity makeup artist Larry Yeo, nutritional advice from Bibi Chia and photography tips on how to pose, from the famed photographer Joel Lim! 

Each speaker was very informative and interesting, and it was a great session! I was roped in to do a demonstration as well.. (You'd have seen the video before in my previous Darlie Expert White blogpost) and I think everyone was just as convinced with the efficacy as Darlie Expert White as I was the first time I tried this experiment :D 

Had a lot of fun at the event, with my fellow beauty bloggers and friends! (Pictured above: Roseanne, Evonne and Charmain!) Thanks for having us, Elle! 

Thought I'd be a lil more casual on this Saturday afternoon, so I donned on a Basic Tee Top in Yellow and Denim Dungarees Skirt in Rose, both are upcoming pieces on TheVelvetDolls.sg and I love them to pieces! Fun and easy to wear, and I like the bright color combination :D Paired with my bling Toms, which are one of my favourite pairs of loafers. Super comfy!

In other more recent news, the haze is so insaneeee :( Hope everyone is drinking lots of water and staying indoors! All-time high of PSI 321 earlier, and I shut myself off in my enclosed room once I got back home from rehearsal. I think everyone had the same idea as I did, because I couldn't even get a cab from town: all the cabs were busy when I usually can get one in minutes! Had to take the train back and get a cab from Serangoon Central instead.

Thankfully, this week hasn't been as crazy packed as last week, so all's been good! The staff are all working hard and everyone's doing their best to adapt to the new system/website. Of course, there's still been problems and cock-ups, but sigh, I guess it's only to be expected.

It was a nerve-wracking launch night, because despite all the preparations we did and assurances from our server guys, YES... the website still crashed, and was down for a good 2-3 hours! And of course, it wasn't like I could do anything to help so all I could do was to stare at my phone, waiting for updates, and refreshing every 10 minutes (but trying not to refresh so often so that I didn't contribute to crashing the website) and just praying to see the website online again ;( 

Thank God my awesome tech team (you guys know who you are but your identity is a secret on here) was so on the ball and was making frantic calls to the server guys and doing emergency upgrades to the servers and system, and despite all the issues, managed to get everything up and running! 

I'm also extremely grateful to the very understanding customers who have been so patient and supportive, you don't know how much it means to us :') There's so much more going on behind the scenes that the customer does not see, and I do honestly feel very helpless and at a loss sometimes, when it comes to handling issues with orders and customers. I just hope that in the long run, customers will see that we are truly putting in effort into serving them well, and most importantly doing what we do best, providing pretty and affordable apparel!

Dinner at Fremantle Seafood Market (Clark Quay)

I haven't been a very diligent blogger recently.. Last week was just complete madness with lots of running back and forth for TVD, events, and launching the new website. I'm glad the week is over! And that means I also have time to sit down and do some blogging.. You wouldn't believe how many backdated entries I have :( Sorry! Promise to do some catching up this week, so please come back often if you love me, okay?

So a couple of weeks ago, I spent an awesome evening having dinner at Fremantle Seafood Market!
Does Fremantle Seafood Market look familiar to you? It should, if you frequent Clark Quay! It's right opposite the Central, (near the reverse bungee jumping) and there's an al fresco sitting that offers an A-MAAAAZZZ-ING view of the river!

Unfortunately, we were seated indoors, hahaha. So no pictures of the amazing view. Please go and check it out for yourself :D
Fremantle Seafood Market is of course, known for its seafood, and have just recently launched a brand new menu showcasing the culinary brilliance of Australia with the finest and freshest seafood!
Took a peek at the menu and my appetite was immediately piqued. Everything looked SO good!!! The seafood fans would be extremely happy! :D From fish, oysters, mussels, crabs and almost everything else, Fremantle Seafood Market definitely got it all covered!

We were even provided with disposable bibs so that we didn't get our clothes dirty while eating... That's what I call thoughtful!

We started with one of my favorite seafood dishes EVER, mussels in white wine broth!!
Mussels in Spicy White Wine Broth ($15 for single portion, $25 for sharing portion)

May I emphasize again how much I love mussels? :P Especially in white wine broth.. It is yummy addictive and I always enjoy mopping up the white wine broth with toasted garlic bread! The mussels at Fremantle Seafood Market were great!! Fresh and soft, without that fishy taste. It was also slightly different from the typical White Wine Broth because this one was spicy, with bits of chilli padi in the broth! I really liked that extra kick! Om nom nom. I think I converted YZ into a fan too!

YZ says: Im not a big fan of mussels and rarely find them tasty. But the combination of mussels and white wine blended so well and made the mussels very refreshing and sweet!

Clams in Erdinger Beer Drawn Butter ($15 for single portion, $25 for sharing portion)

Other than the mussels, we also tried the clams! The beer infused flavor of the clams was really interesting, and you could taste the slightly bitter tinge of beer in the broth. If you enjoy beer (like Vernon), you would probably really like this dish! :D I personally preferred the taste of the Spicy White Wine Broth though, but the clams themselves were good.

By the way, there are also other sauces available for both the mussels and clams, such as Cream Herb Pesto, Porcini Pomodoro, and Thai Green Curry! Sounds really interesting, and you ought to try these flavours if you have adventurous tastebuds!

Whilst we were waiting for the rest of our dishes to be served, we got ourselves a Bulmers that washed down all the food perfectly! I don't really drink beers, but I like ciders in small amounts! 

Stir-Fried Mushrooms, Topped with a Poached Egg ($8)

We ordered a side (One of the rare non-seafood dishes!) of stir-fried mushrooms, topped with a poached egg and it came piping hot and fresh. Utterly delicious! I love shrooms too, so you can never go wrong with freshly cooked shrooms, in my book. Especially not when it's topped with a soft liquidy oozing poached egg!

So far, every dish was really quite a winner in my eyes, and I couldn't be more excited to set sight on one of the star dishes of the night that arrived shortly at the table!
‘Live’ Dungeness Crab in a creamy and tangy Honey Mustard Sauce ($78 - Crab weighs between 800gms to 1kg)

None other than the Dungeness Crab in Honey Mustard Sauce.. The aroma that was wafting off this dish when the waiter presented it at the table was soooo appetizing!
Most of us have crabs in a very traditional fashion: Chilli Crab, Black Pepper Crab etc.. This combination of Honey Mustard with Dungeness Crab was invented by the new Chef de Cuisine, Cher Ter Ming Yuan, and I thought that it was really very refreshing and different, and it tasted amazing too! The Honey Mustard provided a rich and buttery flavor to complement the sweetness of the crab, and I couldn't resist my favorite fried mantous together with the Honey Mustard sauce, it was sooooo good!! 

The Dungeness Crab is also a different species of crab from the usual (Sri Lankan crab, usually, which is also available on the menu) and it tasted slightly different as well, with sweeter flesh and a softer, thinner shell. All of us at the table really enjoyed it!! Other than Honey Mustard, you can also pick from good ole' Chilli Crab flavour, or be adventurous with flavours like Cajun Spice Garlic Herb and Thai Green Curry!

YZ says: I'm pretty impressed with the flavor used to prepare this dish. One of my favorite dish as it's very tasty and rich. Simply love the sauce and it's really creative of the chef to think of using Mustard to prepare this dish. Thumbs up!!!

Salmon Fish Head Grilled with Kabayaki Sauce ($15)

This might not be a dish most of us would order, but we ordered it on recommendation, and it was excellent! The salmon fish head was well-grilled with a light tasty marinate, and the meat was so soft and light it practically melted in the mouth! I believe YZ particularly enjoyed this too!

Scottish Salmon Fish & Chips ($22)

We've all had Fish & Chips before, but a Salmon Fish & Chips is something special that I haven't seen around very often, maybe because Salmon fish is notorious for being tough and dry with a fishy taste once overcooked, and deep frying it probably takes a lot of skill to get done correctly!

Amazingly enough, we all agreed that this Salmon Fish & Chips was one of the best Fish & Chips we've tasted, thanks to the juicy and soft texture of the salmon fish that was cooked just right! Went so well with the crispy batter and tartar sauce especially.. And it's only $22 for a very generous portion! I would take Fremantle Seafood Market's Fish & Chips over Fish & Co any day now! 

YZ says: Never like cooked salmon other than raw sashimi with wasabi but i was surprised to taste fish and chips using salmon which was uniquely tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. Good choice of fish for deep frying!

Look at that deep brown batter.. So good!

Crimson Sea Perch ($32)
Grilled Sea Perch & Scallops Wrapped in Marigold Leaf Served with Wilted Spinach, Mashed Potato, Wild Mushrooms & Emulsion Lobster Bisque

Other than crabs and other seafood, the fish at Fremantle Seafood Market is really good too, and I thought that this Crimson Sea Perch was definitely worthy, I liked the flavor of the lobster bisque emulsion and the sea perch was moist and firm! The sauces complemented the fish very well, too.

Wild King Snapper ($28)
Pan-Seared Snapper & Shellfish Wrapped in Marigold Leaf Served with Sauteed Mushroom Cream Sauce
We also tried the Wild King Snapper, which was pan-seared and had a sweet and delicate texture.

I would say that you won't go wrong with either dish, but if you like it richer and more flavorful, go for the Sea Perch, while if you prefer a dish that allows the taste of the fish to shine through a little more, go for the Wild King Snapper ;) Because so many of the dishes we ordered were very rich and strong, I personally liked the Wild King Snapper more! :D

'Live' Whole Lobster Thermidor ($58)
Baked with Mushroom Cream, Hollandaise and White Wine

This dish is oh-so-sinful.. Just look at that layer of baked mushroom cream and hollandaise sauce on top of it! The lobster is procured live, and you can taste that the meat is really firm and springy and fresh. It was so delicious with the rich sauce, and I like it that the lobster meat was thoughtfully prepared by the chef and cut up before baking, so you don't have to go through the hassle of digging and pulling it out from the lobster shell! Yums!


Lastly, we finally made it to the end of our extremely scrumptious dinner, with desserts!! :D
Half & Half Cheese Cake ($8)

I can't believe we managed to still find space for desserts, but the Half & Half Cheese Cake was so good, I almost gobbled up one entire portion by myself! It's called "Half & Half" because the bottom half is baked, while the top half is non-baked. This gives it a very interesting texture that is lighter and less dense than a regular baked cheesecake, and I really enjoyed it! :D

YZ says: It presented a different texture on each layer and I like this dessert very much especially the non baked portion. Soft and smooth and not too sweet.

And with that, we concluded our extremely yummy dinner.. Was so super duper stuffed but it was worth it!! Can't wait to be back again, for my favorites like the Dungeness Crab with Honey Mustard Sauce, Mussels with White Wine Broth, Salmon Fish & Chips and more!!
